When it comes to excavator long arms, one size certainly does not fit all. While both two-section and three-section (demolition) arms extend a machine's reach, their structural DNA is engineered for entirely different missions.
The two-section long arm is the undisputed champion of earthmoving. Consisting simply of an extended boom and stick, its primary goal is to maximize digging radius and depth. It is the go-to solution for river dredging, deep foundation pit excavation, and slope grading. However, due to its structural geometry, a standard two-section arm typically reaches a maximum opening angle of about 160 degrees when fully extended. This makes it phenomenal for horizontal or downward reaching but less ideal for straight vertical demolition.
Enter the three-section demolition arm. Designed specifically for high-rise building dismantling, this configuration adds a middle section to the assembly. The most critical structural difference lies in its articulation; a three-section arm can achieve an opening angle of nearly 180 degrees, allowing it to form a perfectly straight line. This design enables operators to reach significantly higher elevations while maintaining precise vertical control. Furthermore, three-section arms are heavily reinforced to withstand the immense shock loads generated by hydraulic shears or heavy breakers, making them specialized tools for bringing down concrete giants safely from a distance.
